Amazing! I had the grits, tomato pie, collards, and their skewers. The food is great and the service is phenomenal. The only down side is that I am visiting and won’t be able to try everything else on the menu.
I had heard many reviews and suggestions from a local facebook page to try this out and we're glad we made the stop on the way back from the beach. No need to be dressed up, and perfect portions! You feel like you're eating on your grandparents porch. I will say the tomato pie was a let down because I was expecting some sort of bread or crust to go with it but it was mostly onions and tomatoes. Great staff and knowledgeable on the food! The shrimp plate was the best thing we ate there!
What can be said that hasn't already? We've never had anything even remotely close to a negative experience here. Whether you sit right down or have to wait a while, the food and service are always top notch. Literally everything on the menu is always magnificent. Tomato Shed is a special place.
Some of the best freshest veggies I've had in a long time! The Crab salad was so good and the Crab cake was delicious. Have to go back so I can try more!
We weren't really hungry but we were told to try their crab cakes. So we stopped and split one. It was extremely good! We also got a blubbery pie and peach cobbler. Both were equally as delicious!
We came by this place thru exploring the neighborhood. Boy am I glad. It is an amazing place. The food was amazing. It was like old southern comfort food. So delicious. The people were fantastic. The shop had some cool items I have not seen anywhere. And the banana bread, simply awesome. We had a truly wonderful time and will visit again before we leave SC. It is an absolute must on my bucket list! Thank you to all at this place!
Loved the friendly service, quick and accurate food delivery. I had the pork loin special and it was outstanding. Also tried the tomato pie and that was also great. Will highly recommend stopping in this come as you are eatery.
We had a large party, we still were seated quickly. Service and food were great. There were enough options that everyone found something we liked. Will definitely be back next time we are in the area
Stono Market and tomato shed cafe is a Great local restaurant with fresh ingredients! This restaurant has a small fresh produce grocery and frozen ready to cook meal. They also sell local artists products, kitchen towel, Christmas ornaments, etc. Now for the food, we ordered their famous crab cake and tomato pie and had to admit, they were delicious! The shrimp salad sandwich was good with their homemade sourdough bread. The mixed green citrus salad was fresh and their she crab soup is one of the best in charleston (it was so good I ate them all and didn’t take a picture). Honestly everything were fresh and so filling. Also, try their homemade lemonade its so good! We’ll definitely coming back to try other food in this restaurant!
Great local food, had the poor mans steak that was delicious and bought some the preserves they sell. Great little farmers market recommend passing by for lunch or fresh produce.
Stono Market is a unque combination country pantry with home cooked entrees and desserts to go, fresh vegetables to take home and country kitchen where you can get a meal or sandwich and stay awhile. Good food and friendly atmosphere. We really enjoyed the experience. Kitchen open for lunch only from 11a - 2: 30p.
Johns Island grown vegetables including tomatoes (which are the best tomatoes around regardless of which farm they come from) as long as they were grown on Johns Island.
They have their white skin boiled peanuts, I used to love the red ones but the ones are the best hands down, they have kind of a faint sweet taste to them. I would suggest stopping by to try some because they are delicious. They have all their other Johns Island farm fresh vegetables too.
I know 6/8/2022 they had stone crab claws for $13.99/lb I got some, the were so delicious and big and filled with meat. They also had fresh shrimp 3 different sizes, I didn't get any of those.
If you have not been here to this unique, quaint restaurant, and fresh vegetables along with local jams, jellies, preserves, local geecie boy grits, local American Classic tea in variety of flavors and their various entrees, vegetables, casserole, desserts, cookies, breads etc to take home. I have been coming here for about 30 yrs, and have seen it transform over the years.
My family and I went here recently and it was pretty good. They were busy but they have a very nice porch to sit on and wait for your table. The porch has lots of comfortable seating and even a swing. I didn't really enjoy my steak as I can be pretty picky with steak, so that is my reasoning for the 4 stars instead of 5. It was good but not my favorite. However the she crab soup was incredible! They also have a variety of goods to purchase in the store connected to the restaurant. The jams and jellies looked good. I would definitely recommend eating here at least once.
An awesome hidden gem. My family and I have been regulars at Kiawah for years and have never been here. Will be regulars moving forward! Super good homemade food. Very reasonable prices. Huge portions. Wonderful friendly service. The gift shop and fresh produce are extra touches.
Had the Fried Seafood Cake and she crab soup, both were incredible, especially for the price! Service was very quick even though it was very busy (lunch rush on a Saturday), Lucy was very sweet and kind. I really can't say enough about this place, this is going to be a place we look forward to on our future vacations.
This is a great place for vegetarians, lots of choices to pick from, $14 for 4 vegetable plate. Comes with great corn bread. Waitress was very good! They also have ready to go dishes ready to eat on the market side, along with fresh vegetables and bakery items. The gift shop has some nice local artisan pieces. Super cute swinging sofas on front porch. Perfect stop for lunch on the way to tea tour and winery.
Farm to table at its very best! We had lunch and noticed right away it was a favorite of the locals as well as people like us from out of town. I really, really enjoyed the soup. If you haven't tried she crab soup, theirs was outstanding. The atmosphere was nice, very family friendly.
There is nothing here that I didn't like. I mean nothing. I tried my food my girlfriend's food. We ordered six different sides and tried them all. It was just one amazing party in my mouth after another!
Most of the time this place has really good food. Food is usually top notch. The reason why I'm rating a 4 is because of the pricing. I realize EVERYTHING is going up, but they went up in price a while ago now before mostly everything else did. It uses to be "affordable" comfort food. Now it's a bit on the pricey side, so that's why I don't go as often as I used to. Like I said, food is tasty and everyone is polite. Also another thing that I noticed is the sweet teas and lemonade used to come with your food. Now it doesn't. No offense, but its just a bit much. Don't get me wrong I enjoy eating here and I will continue, just not as much. $$$
We just finished having lunch here on our way to Kiawah Island and everything was delicious! I had a spicy pimento cheese grilled cheese (so delicious) with their squash casserole and added a dose of the ginger beets over greens. Yum! My husband had the tomato shed shrimp (those shrimp were seasoned perfectly) with the tomato pie, and creamy dill cucumbers. He said it was the best tomato pie he’s ever had. I hate cooked tomatoes and I even thought it was tasty! We finished it all off with some banana pudding!
Food was fresh, flavorful, and awesome. Service was great. Cute little shop along a small farmers market type store off to one side. Have nothing bad to say. It was all quite wonderful!
This is an adorable place. They have a beautiful porch with seating. The food way absolutely delicious and good portions. I will definitely be going back.
Really nice staff and tomato pie! I love how fresh the veggies are in every dish. Local arts and handcrafts are interesting. Relaxing swing chairs and seats on porch make it fun to hangout. A shop attached inside for fresh farm produce. I enjoyed a good time there.
We went to the Stono Market & Cafe for lunch. We where immediately greeted and offered a seat. The feeling was we where treated like family and not just customers. We had the Tomato Shad Shrimp with onions, green and red peppers, just enough spice for a little kick. The Country Fried steak was hand breaded with a pepper gravy. We had the tomato pie, a true southern favorite, and just as good as my grandmother’s recipe. The service from Ginny was impeccable, truly a place that makes you feel like home, at least one of the locals. As a suggestion, skip the chain restaurants and head to the Stono Market & Tomato Shad Cafe for delightful and filling dining experience. This is a “must go to” place when in the Charleston SC area.
We come here each fall when we stay on the island. Still lovely, great veggies, she crab soup, ice tea and amazing pies and coconut cake. My husband says the best pecan pie ever. The gift shop was cheery and creative!
This place was the closest to where we are staying. Oh my goodness. The southern comfort food here is Forreal. I’m from Maryland and I can’t even walk now. We came right before lunch ended and order dinner as well… plates are clean! Foooooood comaaaa! We’ll be back! Mac and cheese, squashed casserole… all of it!
Prime Rib Dinner was very good just need to do some work on the mashed potatoes. Shrimp and Grits meal was good and also the Fried Pork Chops was fried tender and juicy
3 stars because the staff was kind and the food not horrible. My $12 hamburger was standard, served with a $1 bun and on a styrofoam plate. The befriended cat waited for the door to open and ran straight to the kitchen. It wasn’t bad, just not good.
If you want true country cooking than go here! Service is awesome (Jenny) and the food the BEST. I joke you NOT! I'm a yankee from Boston you gave to check this place out!
Must go. Mrs. Angie was the best server and so fun and polite. The food was great. It hit the spot and rubbed it. The Pimento Cheese Burger is totally recommended. The environment is amazing and definitely worth the wait and drive. Great place to have late lunch or dinner with a couple of friends.
The cheeseburger I got was great, and the market and restaurant had a nice atmosphere. The server was polite but a bit abrasive and what should have been a nice lunch with the girls (usually about an hour) on our way out of Charleston took over 2 hours. Also, they were using plastic cups and plates for service which cannot be environmentally friendly. Again, the food was great and there was plenty of room at the table. The hostess was nice.
Can’t say enough good things about the Tomato Shed! Will go way out of my way to eat there. Great atmosphere and very friendly and efficient staff. Excellent menu and food. Only problems: long lines (…”lines are so long no one goes there anymore …”) and dinner not served all week!
Great Southern Style cooking and good service. I had the chicken salad with butter beans and potato salad. Everything was yummy. My friends I was eating with raved about their meals as well. I will definitely eat here again next time I am in this area.
St. John's Parrish, SC. We each had "4 vegetable plate" and glad we did. We chose eight different veges. All were our favorite until we tasted a new favorite. Man, the broth in those butterbeans, tomato pie, cabbage, carrot raisin pineapple slaw or any of their food is satisfying. John's Island's best place to eat. Also, the freshmarket reveals the reason our plates were clean. Loved it.
This was a super cute place on the side of the road not on the main drag but it was a hidden gem! The service and food was amazing. The atmosphere was so cool and there was plenty of things to do/look at while we waited to be seated. They use fresh ingredients. If you're anywhere near this place, Go! You won't regret it.
Hands down the best hamburger that I have ever eaten! I ate here about 8 years ago when I was in the area and ordered their hamburger and told my daughter that it was the best hamburger that I had ever had. Well, she remembered that comment and we went here last week. It hasn't changed! Best ever!
Best lowcountry vegetables i've had. Farm Fresh. Casual setting at the old tomato packing shed on Johns Is. The crab cakes are award winning. The shrimp salad was terrific. Very authentic food like my grand mother made growing up.
Our waitress was friendly and gave the kids a cookie as long as they ate their food. First time I had squash casserole and it was yummy. The bbq sandwich was really good too. The bbq sauce was mustard base with just the right amount of sweet.
Our food was amazing! Our server was the best we've ever had! Water didn't reach empty at all. She checked on us frequently, but not so much she was disturbing us. Cute restaurant, great food, the best service. 100% recommend.
Homestyle southern cooking at its best. Very busy, and I can see why! We walked through the market while we waited on our table. Our server was so sweet, and recommended a couple of side items that did not disappoint. My husband had the fried pork chop, which had flavor for days, and I got the veg plate because they have so many side options that sounded soooo good (get the Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes with gravy). The food was fantastic, would recommend!
Great restaurant. Food was wonderful! Staff is great, friendly. Lots of vegetable choices in the menu. The crab cake was very good, full of crab meat not much filler. I had the Tomato Shed Shrimp, grits, and stewed okra and tomatoes. Very good flavors. The she crab soup was tasty. Lunch is served on paper plates. The farmer's market inside the restaurant has some great selections of veggies and other items. Menu picture is just entrees, not full menu. There is more to the menu, just got distracted by all the choices.
