Howard Johnson by Wyndham Downtown Rapid City

Update: Fire alarm engaged at 3AM. No communication from staff throughout the process. Man at front desk needs costumer service training. His handling of the situation and his attitude towards guests asking questions about what was going on was unacceptable.

The first room we were assigned had a smell of sour water. However, the front desk was quick to switch our room. The second room was clean, spacious, and all appliances were in working order, although somewhat outdated. Nothing egregious for ~$50/ night.

This hotel was a pleasant stay in Rapid City. However, we had gotten a room which did not have a private bathroom, and had oudated amenities, some of which weren't working. The carpet also needed replacement.

Complimentary breakfast is a nice touch along with the pool. There were also 2 hot tubs which did NOT work when we had stayed at the hotel.

For $51 a night this place was great. The staff was very friendly. The complimentary breakfast was great they had a variety of good options. The hotel room was okay the sheets were a bit thin and the shower water pressure was weak. My only issue was that the fire alarms went off at 3: 30 am and the alarm was exceptionally loud, so we didn’t end up going back to sleep that night and we had a 13hr road-trip that day. The people in the room across from us put foil in the microwave lol, but the hotel handed it very well the manager came up along with fire fighters.

Had a great stay here! Great service! Walking distance to the monument. Friendly staff. Our go to during the LNI tournament. Look forward to staying here again!

No breakfast at all

Old amenities, shower worst pressure ever, trickling, with no hot water flow in between

No routine housekeeping services despite mentioning on their website, staff adamant about not getting it done as well

One hot tub not working during peak busy times, lot of people crowded in one tub

Summary: misleading website info, disappointing services, highly not recommended especially for the cost

Location and room was wonderful. The pool spa is an amazing place and completely different room of it's own. Well maintained and I spent most of my time floating looking up at the ceiling. If you're not going to have a HOT continental breakfast then don't have one at all. Getting rid of breakfast may have been a Howard Johnson decision but hopefully Wyndham will have an influence to return this. A brown bag with a muffin, cereal bar, and microwave burrito is NOT breakfast.

I had expected a little bit more from this hotel based on previous reviews and photos. The facility is old. The shower pressure is VERY low. Intermittently changes to cold water and takes a long time to return to warm water. The coffee machine pot was not working. Their breakfast was grab and go but was very stale appearing. The staff flat-out said that there won't be housekeeping services. I understand with covid, they are not providing daily services but they just refused to give any service on request. But at the same time, they were allowing people to be in the pool and hot tub without any restrictions of number, so Covid is definitely an excuse to not give services or provide decent breakfast. We had to go to the desk with towels each day, and they will count them and only replace those many towels. Speaking about the hot tubs, they had 2 hot tubs so I was very excited about it but jet was not working for one of those, so people were overcrowded in one tub!
Overall, I feel like their photos are little misleading, they need to work on fixing basic services like house servicing, plumbing etc

The room was very quiet and clean. The pool area was nice. My family really enjoyed staying here. Loved that it is dog friendly. My absolute only complaint is that the dog fee seems high at 20.00 per dog per night. It is worth it though to be able to stay somewhere nice, clean and safe.

First visit to Rapid city. Wasn't sure which hotel I was going to stay at decided to stay at Howard Johnson's. Good choice a large four-story hotel. Adequate parking staff that I dealt with were very professional and friendly. Swimming pool and gym on site. Also meeting rooms available. My room was rather large had two queen beds, working desk, dresser, microwave and refrigerator. Toilet and showering one room vanity was out in the room itself. Only disappointing part about to stay was the breakfast. I was here for 6 days and it was a grab and go breakfast every morning. Paper bag with a muffin a granola bar and a microwavable burrito. The reason I was given that there's not a regular breakfast is a can't find people to hire. With the staff that they have here they should be able to figure out a way to make it work. Close to downtown, mall is about 7 minutes away. Gas stations and convenience stores just a couple of minutes away as well. Easy access to a lot of the main attractions here made that easy. Certainly recommend staying at Howard Johnson's if you're ever in town. Good place. I would stay here again

We enjoyed our stay, especially the pool area, until breakfast.
Breakfast was just a to-go bag with some plastic wrapped fried empanada, a burrito and a small muffin.
In July 2022 Corona is nothing but an excuse for the lack of service

Adequate rooms. Loved the pool and hot tubs (though one of them was broken). Great location. The complimentary breakfast was terrible.

Grab and go breakfast, and no house keeping. Still using COVID as an excuse just so they can be cheap! When we arrived to the hotel we found old food in the refrigerator and hair all over the bathroom floor. It had stormed one night while we were there and water was pouring into the our room through the window frame! They charge way too much money for what it is.

Always a favorite place to stay. Clean, nice sized rooms and on a quiet street. We've stayed there several times and we're never disappointed. We'll be back next time we're in Rapid City.

Definitely not meant for more than a day's stay. Housekeeping only comes if you call them. Breakfast was the same every day (breakfast burrito, blueberry muffin, and cereal bar). Bathroom light was dim and flickered. There was hair on the shower wall, which made me question whether the room was cleaned between visits. Shampoo and conditioner bottles were tiny and we had to get new ones. However, there were two hot tubs and a heated pool, it's a short walk to downtown, and there's another parking lot on the 2nd floor, so you can transport luggage easily and don't have to use stairs or elevator every time you leave or enter.

Beds in my opinion were hard, could hear everything through the walls and someone decided to vacuume at 7 am

This place was the best. Front desk and staff were the best. Had the presidential suite, was so comfortable and nice. Bedroom with jacuzzi, modern decor, bed was absolutely comfortable. One of the best places we ever stayed. Only suggestion would be having a hot breakfast. Was okay though with plenty of restaurants nearby

Super nice! Was a great price, pool open till 11pm was very nice and warm has 2 hot tubs, staff very friendly. Property was easy to get to. All and all I'm super happy with the decision to stay here. Would definitely stay here again

Breakfast in a bag? Really if you want breakfast go somewhere else. Britton, apple and granola bar.

This was definitely an amazing hotel! Friendly and helpful staff and check in was a breeze! We blew a tire and this hotel was right there! Clean rooms and comfortable bed! Pet friendly and they were very sweet to our pup! We didn’t go swimming but the pool area was one of the nicest I’ve been to. I would recommend this hotel hands down!

I would give 5 stars had it not been for the noise. We stayed 3 nights & were woken up a couple times each night by the parking lot, running/playing in the hall, and people being loud on the elevator. We were on the top floor so I was surprised by the noise although we were right beside the elevator.
This hotel is in a great location, super easy to get downtown, go any direction for tourist spots. The room was clean and we enjoyed the large spa tub very much. Also go mention, the staff was friendly and helpful with food suggesgions.
